You've got a self-image. It might be very positive. You might envision yourself as a swell individual. Or it might be very negative. You might envision yourself as a hateful little stain. Or it might be complicated.


Let's say it's overwhelmingly negative. Let's say you despise yourself, because your image of yourself is of a despicable creature. You might not like feeling this way. But the uncanny irony of it is, you nevertheless love your self-image.


If you're like the rest of us, there's no limit to how far backward you'll bend over to protect and maintain your self-image. This is true even if that selfsame self-image is slowly killing you.
