People ignore them whenever possible. This makes sense, given the large gap between the signals' functioning and traffic reality.

The crosswalk signal button box chirps soothingly for you while you're waiting. Then, when the light turns green, it lets out a laser blast noise and then some rapid-fire blipping. I'm sure local rave musicians and found-sound artists have sampled this noise to death.
