retroactive discontinuity

You went running out the back door, where your dad had left a rake on the ground, and when you stepped right on the tines, up swung the handle and bashed you in the puss. Bloody nose and a fat lip. But did it hurt? No!

And how about the time you were rummaging through your closet and the bowling ball on the top shelf rolled off and beaned you right on the noggin? Did it hurt? No!

Not to mention that incident with the cream pie in your face, the banana peel, and the falling anvil, right? You must have broken every bone in your body. But did it hurt? No!

Because a hurt that doesn't hurt is no hurt at all.
