I was listening to a news article about a woman who was struck by a train and killed. It said that she died instantly. Very sad.

Of course, death has always been part of life. But I found myself wondering, has "dying instantly" always existed?

When I imagine ways to be killed instantly, everything that occurs to me has a technological basis. Trains, planes, bullets, atomic bombs. Machines or explosive substances that deliver violent shocks.

Things that can hit you so fast and forcefully that you're dead without knowing it.

Times past had their techological forms of instant death as well. Arrows, swords, the guillotine.

I've got a feeling that death in the natural world takes a bit of time.

You bleed to death, or starve, or dehydrate, or succumb to illness or cold. Death may come swiftly, but not literally all in a second.

Or am I being naive about death in nature?

A death in which one is aware, however briefly, of the progress of dying, and a death that comes literally before one can draw a startled breath, seem like fundamentally different things.
